Announcing the cities, programs and benefit events for the Israel Philharmonic’s February 2019 U.S. tour.
From February 2 through 9, 2019, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra will be back in the United States for Maestro Zubin Mehta‘s final American tour as IPO Music Director. There will be six concerts: two in New York, three in Florida, and one in Michigan.
Benefit events will enhance the experience in New York City, West Palm Beach and Miami by providing a chance to mingle with the Maestro and personally thank him for his half-century at the orchestra’s helm.
“This upcoming U.S. tour with the Israel Philharmonic marks an important moment for me and for the orchestra,” Maestro Mehta said. “We have exciting programs in all venues, a great soloist at Carnegie Hall with Itzhak Perlman, and a wonderful opportunity for me to revisit venues and cities I have conducted in many times over the years. This orchestra always resonates with American audiences and I love that energy.”
“This concert tour led by the incomparable Zubin Mehta will be quite special,” said American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra CEO Naomi Grabel. “Audiences connect with this orchestra and with our Maestro in a wonderful way that is always unique and exciting to experience.”
THE CONCERTS AND BENEFITS
The tour begins on Saturday, February 2 at 8 p.m. at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Brookville, New York on Long Island. The program will be Schubert’s “Symphony No. 3 in D Major” and Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 7 in E Major.”
It then moves into Manhattan for a 2 p.m. matinee at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, February 3. A Benefit Brunch at 11 a.m. precedes the concert.
The Carnegie Hall program, highlighted by Itzhak Perlman’s performance of Kreisler’s “Liebesleid,” will also include Partos’ “Concertino,” Beethoven’s “Romance No. 1 in G major, Op. 40,” Beethoven’s “Romance No. 2 in F major, Op. 50,” John Williams’ “Theme from ‘Schindler’s List,’” and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 6.”
February 3 is also Super Bowl Sunday, and AFIPO Benefactors will have an exclusive opportunity to share another of Maestro Mehta’s passions by watching the game with him at a post-concert Super Bowl Party beginning at 5 p.m.
Concerts in Florida will be in West Palm Beach, Miami Beach, and Sarasota beginning on February 5.
On Tuesday, February 5 at 8 p.m. the concert will be in the Alexander W. Dreyfoos, Jr. Concert Hall of Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach. A Special Gala Event honoring Tamar and Milton Maltz will precede the concert. Chairs for the event are Mrs. Harvey Blau, Sherry and Kenneth Endelson, and Sara and Charles Fabrikant. The program will be Schubert’s “Symphony No. 3 in D Major” and Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 7 in E Major.”
On Wednesday, February 6 at 8 p.m., the IPO will perform in the Knight Concert Hall of Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. The concert follows a Gala Dinner chaired by Chaim Katzman. The program will be Schubert’s “Symphony No. 3 in D Major” and Bruckner’s “Symphony No. 7 in E Major.”
On Thursday, February 7 at 8 p.m., the orchestra performs in the Van Wezel Hall in Sarasota, before winging to Ann Arbor, Michigan. There the tour will conclude on Saturday, February 9 at 8 p.m. with a concert for the University Musical Society in the University of Michigan‘s Hill Auditorium. At both the Sarasota and Ann Arbor concerts the program will be Schubert’s “Symphony No. 3 in D Major,” Partos’ “Concertino,” and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 6.”
“The orchestra has just completed a tour to Austria and Italy,” said Grabel. “International touring as Israel’s cultural ambassador is a core program of the orchestra and is a key way in which music builds bridges. I know the entire orchestra is looking forward to being back in America in the New Year.”
