Each year the KeyNote program reaches over 29,000 Israeli children and 2017 is off to a phenomenal start with events targeting diverse groups.
In 2014, 1500 students from across Israel were treated to a special concert entitled “When East and West Meet.” Pieces by Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov, Saint-Saens and Vilensky were performed by members of the IPO alongside the Young Philharmonic Orchestra (ages 15-18.) Additionally, 60 children from El Wasphia school in Nazareth played Darbukas (drums) and Shesh-Besh, (the Arab Jewish ensemble under the auspices of the IPO), participated as well.
By the end of the concert the stage was filled up with over 220 people, performing together and moving the hearts of the young listeners.
Earlier, there were several “Spanish Fiesta” concerts for elementary schools. 4,500 children in grades four through six listened to the IPO perform Spanish repertoire and enjoyed the virtuoso playing of young violinist Abraham Terifa, who played a solo with the Orchestra as well as the “Spanish Dance” by Manuel De Falla. Flamenco dancer Shira Shemi performed to the music of the “Cappricio Espagnol” by Rimsky-Korsakov and Shachar Lavi, a young singer, sang arias from “Carmen”.
Additionally, a “Musical Story Time” was held this month. This program introduces our youngest audiences – ages three to six – to classical music. Actors from Israel’s National Theater and musicians from the IPO come together to engage children in an afternoon of music and drama. Musicians Yegal Mletzer, Gal Raviv, Micha Davis and actor Gabriel Hadar participated.
The momentum will continue next month with two more inspiring events – a meeting of over 1,000 students majoring in music as well as a special day for young horn players, bringing together over 100 young musicians and teachers. Julie Landsman, a former principal horn player with the Metropolitan Opera, will join this dedicated group of students as a special guest.
