KeyNote Education and Outreach Program

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s KeyNote Program brings classical music and its glorious history to the audience of the future through music education and community involvement. Classical music is used as a vehicle for teaching compassion, nurturing our youth and enriching the cultural life of Israel. KeyNote has a wide array of programs, bringing classical music into Jewish, Arab-Israeli, and religious and secular schools, from kindergartens to high schools, throughout Israel. By using music as the common denominator, KeyNote can encourage a shared interest that has infinite possibilities for the next generation.

KeyNote I

This is the largest program in the KeyNote Education and Outreach project, reaching over 15,600 students in the Tel Aviv-Yaffo School System.  Starting in elementary school each child receives:

  • Four in-classroom preparatory sessions with IPO orchestra members, some accompanied by moderators from the Levinsky Teacher’s College, and other musicians preferring direct contact with the students, performing and teaching at the same time.
  • Once the students are familiar with the musical basics, they experience two full IPO concerts at the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv.
  • All of these children continue in this program for a total of three years.

High School Program

The High School program consists of two different segments

  • The Music Majors Program reaches 3,900 High School students who have a special interest in music. Classes of music majors attend regular IPO subscription concerts by purchasing subsidized tickets and an IPO member treats them to a pre-concert talk designed specifically for them.
  • The second High School Program reaches 2,500 juniors and seniors who have no musical orientation. They participate in a two years program attending two morning concerts designed for them, after having had preparatory classes at their school.

Bar Ilan University: Institute for the advancement of integration in the school system

  • This program reaches 1,700 students from religious public schools. Preparation is conducted in the schools as part of Bar Ilan University’s "What’s to be Heard" program. The IPO musicians do not participate in the in-school preparation, they perform in a specially produced program at the Mann Auditorium.
  • Another 2,500 kindergarten and first grade students attend concerts performed by up to eight IPO members at the Tel Aviv Museum.

KeyNote in the Kindergarten

KeyNote’s kindergarten program has 720 children from South Tel Aviv, Yaffo and Ramat Aviv participate in “Living Music Between the Generations”, a project of the Levinsky Teacher’s College that coordinates high school ensembles with instruction in the kindergartens. A visit by an IPO ensemble, such as the KeyNote Brass, is the culmination of the program.

Arab/Jewish Ensemble

The ensemble is composed of three IPO musicians; violin, flute and double bass; three Arab musicians; oud (oriental violin), nieh (oriental flute) and darbukkah (percussion) and one vocal. They are a model of mutual respect and tolerance as they deal with musical and performance problems. The Arab/ Jewish KeyNote Ensemble performs in classrooms throughout Israel, at the Circle of Peace forum for music educators in the Jezreel Valley and in the United States at the AFIPO Berkshire Weekend in Massachusetts and in New York City.

These types of curriculum based activities are the basis for the Orchestra’s education and outreach program. A gift to endow KeyNote will further create new interactive learning experiences from chamber ensembles playing popular and jazz music that young adults will enjoy, as well as, reaching out to the larger segment of the population that currently do not participate in the world of classical music.
