Since its inception in 1936, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (originally named the Palestine Orchestra) has been dedicated to presenting the world’s greatest music to audiences in Israel and the world. Founded by the outstanding Polish violinist, Bronislaw Huberman, the IPO represents the culmination of his dream “to unite the desire of the country for an orchestra with the desire of the Jewish musicians for a country.” Huberman spent countless hours arranging for first-chair musicians of Eastern European and German orchestras, who had lost their jobs as a result of Nazism, to migrate to Palestine. In doing so, Huberman created an “orchestra of soloists” that under the esteemed leadership of Maestro Zubin Mehta, Music Director for Life, continues to provide vital inspiration to the people of Israel. From the outset, world-renowned soloists and conductors have performed with the IPO. Its inaugural concert was played under the baton of Arturo Toscanini who felt his participation was a means to demonstrate his opposition to Fascism. Since that time, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra has enjoyed associations with such renowned artists as Leonard Bernstein, Laureate Conductor of the IPO, and Kurt Masur, Honorary Guest Conductor of the IPO. Other celebrated artists to perform with the Orchestra are Daniel Barenboim, Yefim Bronfman, Yo-Yo Ma, Midori, Shlomo Mintz, Itzhak Perlman, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Arthur Rubinstein, Gil Shaham, Isaac Stern, Maxim Vengerov, Pinchus Zukerman and many others. Their contributions of time and talent have enriched the cultural life of Israel and have helped the Orchestra to maintain the highest artistic standards. Often said to have more heart than other orchestras, the IPO is Israel’s finest cultural emissary and travels throughout the world, particularly to countries where there is little or no Israeli representation. In some cases, performances of the IPO are the only example of Israel’s existence. The goodwill created by these tours, which have included historic visits to Japan, Argentina, Poland, Hungary, Russia, China and India, is of enormous value to the State of Israel. As a result, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra maintains its position at the forefront of cultural diplomacy and the international music scene Discover why the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra touches the hearts and lives of so many people throughout the world. KeyNote
KEYNOTE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMThe Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s KeyNote Program brings classical music and its glorious history to the audience of the future through music education and community involvement. Classical music is used as a vehicle for teaching compassion, nurturing our youth and enriching the cultural life of Israel. KeyNote has a wide array of programs, bringing classical music into Jewish, Arab-Israeli, and religious and secular schools, from kindergartens to high schools, throughout Israel. By using music as the common denominator, KeyNote can encourage a shared interest that has infinite possibilities for the next generation. KeyNote IThis is the largest program in the KeyNote Education and Outreach project, reaching over 6,000 students in the Tel Aviv-Yaffo School System. Starting in elementary school each child receives: • Four in-classroom preparatory sessions with IPO orchestra members, some accompanied by moderators from the Levinsky Teacher’s College, and other musicians preferring direct contact with the students, performing and teaching at the same time. • Once the students are familiar with the musical basics, they experience two full IPO concerts at the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv. • All of these children continue in this program for a total of three years. High School Program The High School program consists of two different segments. • The Music Majors Program reaches 1,200 High School students who have a special interest in music. Classes of music majors attend regular IPO subscription concerts by purchasing subsidized tickets and an IPO member treats them to a pre-concert talk designed specifically for them. • The second High School Program reaches 2,000 juniors and seniors who have no musical orientation. They participate in a two years program attending two morning concerts designed for them, after having had preparatory classes at their school. Bar Ilan University: Institute for the advancement of integration in the school system• This program reaches 1,700 students from religious public schools. Preparation is conducted in the schools as part of Bar Ilan University’s “What’s to be Heard” program. The IPO musicians do not participate in the in-school preparation, they perform in a specially produced program at the Mann Auditorium. • Another 2,500 kindergarten and first grade students attend concerts performed by up to eight IPO members at the Tel Aviv Museum. KeyNote in the KindergartenKeyNote’s kindergarten program has 720 children from South Tel Aviv, Yaffo and Ramat Aviv participate in “Living Music Between the Generations”, a project of the Levinsky Teacher’s College that coordinates high school ensembles with instruction in the kindergartens. A visit by an IPO ensemble, such as the KeyNote Brass, is the culmination of the program. Arab/Jewish Ensemble The ensemble is composed of three IPO musicians; violin, flute and double bass; three Arab musicians; oud (oriental violin), nieh (oriental flute) and darbukkah (percussion) and one vocal. They are a model of mutual respect and tolerance as they deal with musical and performance problems. The Arab/ Jewish KeyNote Ensemble performs in classrooms throughout Israel, at the Circle of Peace forum for music educators in the Jezreel Valley and in the United States at the AFIPO Berkshire Weekend in Massachusetts and in New York City. These types of curriculum based activities are the basis for the Orchestra’s education and outreach program. A gift to endow KeyNote will further create new interactive learning experiences from chamber ensembles playing popular and jazz music that young adults will enjoy, as well as, reaching out to the larger segment of the population that currently do not participate in the world of classical music. KEYNOTE PROGRAM GIVING OPPORTUNITIESThe KeyNote Education and Outreach Program fills a tremendous void in the music instruction of the children of Israel. It is supported by the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra with proceeds from the annual Berkshire Weekend, the Midwest Chairmen’s Council Chicago events and a major grant from the UJA-Federation of Los Angeles. Funding opportunities for this program are: $1,000,000 Endow the KeyNote Education and Outreach Program $ 500,000 Endow the KeyNote Education and Outreach Manager Position $ 250,000 Endow a series of outreach Programs at the Mann Auditorium $ 100,000 Endow an annual outreach concert in a school or development community $ 50,000 Sponsor a musician for additional educational/outreach concerts $ 25,000 Sponsor the “Music Majors” Program that reaches 1,200 high school students with a special interest in music OR the “KeyNote in the Kindergarten” Program with performances that reaches 720 children OR the “Circle of Peace” Program, a forum of Arab and Jewish musicians and music educators for Jezreel Valley.
