Introduction

Necessitated by the lack of substantial Israeli government subsidy or endowment for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, AFIPO's purpose was crystallized in 1980 through the joint vision of Fredric Mann and Zubin Mehta, who created an endowment fund in the United States to ensure the IPO's future. The following letter was written by Mr. Mann on May 24, 1982 to American friends who recognized his vision.

Dear Friends,

As President of the American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra I am honored to write these few words as we proceed with our campaign to establish an Endowment fund for the Orchestra.

For me, this campaign has special meaning. Twenty-five years ago I had the honor to be part of another campaign for the benefit of the Israel Philharmonic- then our goal was to build a permanent physical home for the Orchestra in Israel. We succeeded: twenty-five years later, the Fredric R. Mann Auditorium is still standing and the Orchestra regularly performs in that hall, exhibiting for all the citizens of Israel the degree of musical excellence which has become its hallmark.

Now the friends of the Orchestra are going forward with another venture of equal importance. Having taken care of the body, we are now concerned with the soul. Our new Endowment Fund can truly be the means of providing the Orchestra with the resources which will enable it to survive and flourish as an example of cultural achievement by a proud, if often beleaguered people.

I am enormously pleased that Zubin Mehta has joined our effort as Honorary Chairman of the American Friends. Twenty-five years ago his name and his talent were known only to a select few. Today he is one of the towering figures on the world music scene.

Zubin is not a "fair-weather" friend of the Orchestra. He has stood with it- and in front of it - in good times and in bad, in wartime and in peacetime, always providing the inspired musical leadership without which no combination of musicians, whatever their talents, could ever be called an orchestra. A few months ago the Orchestra elected him Music Director for Life, thereby guaranteeing that their long association will continue for many more years.

But one aspect of that relationship is not free from doubt- what will be the fate of the Orchestra in years to come? Will it continue to be one of the great symphony orchestras of the world? Will it become even greater? Our new Endowment Fund can provide an answer. It can be the cornerstone for years of growth and development for a unique institution.

Once again, the Israel Philharmonic's future is in our hands.

Fredric R. Mann

Since1981, generous contributions from thousands in the United States and Canada have generated over $15 million in AFIPO's Herman S. Sandler Endowment Fund, helping to secure the Orchestra's financial future, while providing general operating support.

Fredric Mann's message resonates today with the same energy and importance as it did in 1982. Concerned with supporting the consistent quality of the IPO now and looking to insure its future financial security, American Friends continuously strive to accomplish Mr. Mann's original goal. Americans with ties to Israel have always recognized the importance of the IPO's role in Israel, and throughout the world, and have been a vital component in helping to sustain the Orchestra.

The colorful history of the AFIPO which follows has come full circle to Fredric Mann's final words, "Once again, the Israel Philharmonic's future is in our hands."
